In this post, you’ll discover how to peel beans with a blender.
Many Nigerians love to eat meals made from beans, especially, Moi-Moi and Akara.
However, the usual process it takes to prepare them is not one many are willing to undertake. This process normally requires one to peel or dehull each bean manually.
This is done after initially soaking the beans soaking them in water for some time to moisten the beans and make them easier to peel.
Next, you’d have to take a handful of beans on the palm of your hands and rub your hands together. The motion of rubbing or scrubbing the beans between your palms allows the beans to peel off their coat.
The process is a long and tedious one and because of this, many families usually reserve the preparation of Akara and Moi-Moi meals only on special days such as public holidays.
Fortunately, there’s an easier, faster method of peeling beans for your Moi-Moi and Akara. In fact, it doesn’t even require that stressful and discouraging long soaking and scrubbing routine.
But to do it you will need to have an electric blender. If you have one already, splendid! If you don’t, you can browse through this section here to see some of the best blenders for your kitchen and snap them up at the closest electronics store near you.
So, let’s dive into it then.
How to Peel Beans with a Blender
To peel beans with a blender quickly, you’ll need the following items:
– Beans (red beans, lima beans, or black-eyed beans)
– Sieve or colander
– Water
– Electric blender
Procedure:
1. Start by pouring the beans into a large bowl and filling it with enough water to submerge the beans.
2. Leave the beans to soak in the water for only five minutes.
This allows only the bean coat to soften without necessarily softening the beans themselves.
3. Now, start placing some of the beans into the blender jar. Add enough water into the jar as well to allow the beans to circulate freely in the blender jar.
4. Most electric blenders come with a pulse button. If yours has this, then press and hold it for 10 seconds and release the button.
Do this intermittently for five minutes. You should see the coat peeling off the beans if your blender jar is transparent.
However, if the blender doesn’t have a pulse button, then make use of the conventional buttons that come with your appliance.
The process is the same. Push the button and let it blend for 10 seconds then stop and repeat at intervals for five minutes.
The reason why you have to limit the blending to just 10 seconds every interval is to avoid completely blending the beans themselves. We only want to peel them, remember?
5. After peeling the beans with the blender, pour the content of the jar into a separate bowl and repeat the process for the remaining soaked beans.
6. Now, we need to separate the peels from the beans. So, pour some water into the bowl containing the peeled beans. You should see the beans’ coat float to the surface of the water.
7. As the beans’ coat floats onto the water surface, strain them through the sieve or colander and leave only the peeled beans in the bowl.
Repeat the process until all the coats have been collected in the sieve. You may still see a few unpeeled beans in your bowl despite following the entire process above.
You can simply pick these out and manually peel them. With that, you’ve successfully peeled beans using your electric blender.
The process might take some getting used to but when you do it repeatedly, you’ll get the hang of it.
Final Words
The most tasking aspect of peeling beans when it comes to making Moi-Moi or Akara balls is the manual process of peeling the beans.
